Elevator Observations
This is an excerpt from the paper...
I chose to spend three hours in the elevator at the Boston County Courthouse. During this time I was able to observe more than four dozen people as they entered, used, and then exited the elevator. The time span I spent in the elevator was on a Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to 12:00 noon. While this report’s length does not permit a description of the behavior and mannerisms of all who used the elevator, I will focus on the individuals whose behavior and mannerisms I found the most interesting. The first group of people to use the elevator included a male and a young man who appeared to be related to him, two men dressed in business suits, and a female of late middle age. At all times during the observation period I stood beside the panel housing the different buttons for the different floors. Tuesday being a day when court is in session, I was able to observe many people involved in the justice system, either from the legal aspect or those facing legal prosecution. The two business men stood prominently and confidently in the middle of the elevator, and the middle aged woman stood near the front on the opposite side from me. The young male seemed apprehensive and nervous. He looked as if he were still tired and as if his just washed hair and scrubbed skin were signs t

At floor two a woman and two small children got onto the elevator. The woman looked a bit frazzled and said to one of the children, “hurry up.” The children were between the ages of four to six and she held the hand of the smaller child who stayed closely beside her the entire time they were on the elevator. The other child of six paced around the elevator floor and starting hitting on the floor buttons on the panel. At this point she reached over and grabbed him fairly firmly and said, “What did I tell you about behaving? I’m going to tell Jack now.” I assumed Jack was her boyfriend or some male authority figure in the child’s life, but did not think she was referring to her husband because she did not call the man “your father.” She smiled at me once she grabbed the six year old as if to
