Edison NHS
This is an excerpt from the paper...
In West Orange, New Jersey, the Edison National Historical Site (Edison NHS) is the setting for a museum and the 29 room mansion that was the former home of the great inventor, manufacturer, businessman and American citizen. The grounds house Edison’s research and development laboratory, a sizeable museum, and his former home. One of the most influential inventors and businessmen in American history, the achievements from Edison’s laboratory had an impact on millions of people around the world. Edison’s achievements include the motion picture camera, the electric light bulb, sound recordings, silent and sound films, and the nickel-iron alkaline storage battery. Edison’s lab continued to operate after his death in the early 1930s and it was a harbinger of today’s research and development lab. More than a lab, the Laboratory Unit was a complex that housed many structures and also combined manufacturing with research and development, “At West Orange, Edison and his colleagues connected the inventive process with the organization of manufacturing that produced products for distribution to an international mass market. The Laboratory unit, which was dedicated to the business of inventing, contains fourteen structures, six of which Edison had built in 1887 to serve as his laboratory. Also part of the site is the Black Maria, a replica of the world’s first structure designed as a motion picture studio” (Edison 1).
