The Eurycea salamander makes its home in the Jollyville Plateau, an area that is surrounded by the Colorado River, MoPac, Lake Travis, and Highway 183 in Austin, Texas (Jollyville 1). The Eurycea salamander maintains its gills until adulthood, which makes it capable of breathing underwater which is why its habitats of choice are caves, springs, and spring surface flows. The latitude and longitude of the Jollyville Plateau are as follows:Jollyville Plateau 30o 18’ N 97o 42’ W The warm and even climate in Austin does not have a great impact on the Jollyville Plateau, nor the plant or animal life there. The Plateau includes 91 caves with numerous species of endemic to them including spiders, psuedoscorpions, harvestmen, beetles, and the Eurycea salamander. The adult salamander grows to about two inches in length. The Jollyville Plateau lies about 16 kilometers west of downtown Austin, Texas, in Travis County. The Jollyville Plateau is located slightly east of Lake Travis on the Colorado River. The cave system includes six species which are on the endangered species list of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including the Tooth Cave Spider, Bee Creek Cave Harvestman, Bone Cave Harvestman, Tooth Cave Psuedoscorpion, the Tooth Cave Ground Beetle, and the Kretschmarr Cave Mold Beetle (Mylroie and Tronvig 6).
