W.E.B. Dubois is considered one of the father’s of social science. The black leader was convinced that racial problems in American society were due to ignorance and he was determined to learn as much as he could to help resolve the problems. After a study of historical, statistical, anthropological, and sociological pursuit, Dubois published the outcomes of his efforts in The Philadelphia Negro. In The Philadelphia Negro “It revealed the Negro group as a symptom, not a cause; as a striving, palpitating group, and not an inert, sick body of crime; as a long historical development and not a transient occurrence” (Dubois X). If we examine Chapter X of Dubois’ work entitled The Health of Negroes, we get a better understanding of Dubois’ results and conclusions that have an effect on African American health and the health care system today. We will now look at these results and conclusions in Chapter X and explore some of their effects.In The Health of Negroes Dubois argues that socioeconomic and health statistics of Negroes in Philadelphia at the end of the 19th century demonstrate a dualistic health community: “We have side by side and in intimate relationship in a large city two groups of people, who as a mass differ considerably from each other in physical health” (158).
