Dubois The Philadelphia Negro

W.E.B. Dubois is considered one of the father’s of social science. The black leader was convinced that racial problems in American society were due to ignorance and he was determined to learn as much as he could to help resolve the problems. After a study of historical, statistical, anthropological, and sociological pursuit, Dubois published the outcomes of his efforts in The Philadelphia Negro. In The Philadelphia Negro “It revealed the Negro group as a symptom, not a cause; as a striving, palpitating group, and not an inert, sick body of crime; as a long historical development and not a transient occurrence” (Dubois X). If we examine Chapter X of Dubois’ work entitled The Health of Negroes, we get a better understanding of Dubois’ results and conclusions that have an effect on African American health and the health care system today. We will now look at these results and conclusions in Chapter X and explore some of their effects.

In The Health of Negroes Dubois argues that socioeconomic and health statistics of Negroes in Philadelphia at the end of the 19th century demonstrate a dualistic health community: “We have side by side and in intimate relationship in a large city two groups of people, who as a mass differ considerably from each other in physical health” (158). Dubois comes to other conclusions as well. His studies show that Negroes die in more numbers from diseases like consumption, pneumonia, heart disease, diseases of the nervous system and others. While Dubois concludes that systemic racism has created in Negroes a “mode of life and physical efficiency distinctly and noticeably below the average”, that same society bears the burden of healthcare costs for Negroes who are poor and ill.

Dubois also blames slave history and systemic racism in American society for another of his conclusions. In explaining the reason for the higher costs from Negro health problems, Dubois explains, “Primarily...
