Excretion

The urinary/excretory system serves the function of absorbing and excreting waster from cellular respiration. The excretory system actually involves subsystems that help the body eliminate waste. When it comes to urinary excretion, the kidneys are significantly involved, whereas, the excretion of carbon dioxide occurs through the lungs. As we have seen in the previous paper the intestines are integral in the elimination of solid waster. While some liquid waster evaporates from the skin and some is lost via the lungs, the majority of liquid waste are removed from the body through the kidneys. The kidneys are a complex organ which contain millions of tiny nephrons which help filter the liquid waste. The kidneys, however, are only one part of the system responsible for eliminating the bulk of liquid waste from the body, the urinary system, “The urinary system is made up of the kidney, the bladder, and three tubes. Liquid waste is produced in the kidneys and stored in the muscular bladder. A kidney is a bean shaped organ about ten centimeters long and inside each are about one million capillary clumps. As blood flows through the capillaries =,, certain substances move from the blood through the capillary walls into the tubes. Among the waste products that are disposed of by the excretory system, are extra salts and minerals. Also, quite a bit of water is filtered out. H2O makes up 95% of the urine” (Excretory 1). The kidneys help to maintain a balance in the blood by removing water from the body.

The excretory system is quite essential to the proper functioning and maintenance of the body. Like any other organic system it is subject top breakdown periodically. Waste products build up in the body whose high levels can cause disease and may even prove fatal from toxic poisoning. One malfunction of the kidneys is known as uremia, an inability of liquid waste to be excreted that builds up in the b
