Frats and Sorority Control

The Greek system is out of control. Binge drinking, hazing, date rape and other acts have changed what used to be a right of passage to maturity into a wrong of passage. To change this situation, more controls are needed.

Deaths, alcohol poisoning and drug overdoses, rapes and vandalism continue to occur within the Greek system. As such, more controls are warranted to stem this tide of illicit activity and to hold Greek members more accountable and responsible.

Points of Debate (Reason & Evidence)

a) There have been numerous deaths from binge-drinking in the Greek system.

b) There have been a number of deaths from hazings-gone-wrong in the Greek system.

c) The Greek system continues to embarrass the university and community through disruptive and criminal behavior.

d) Self-policing by Greek members has not resulted in a curb on binge-drinking, drug use or other sordid activities.

e) Schools and communities lose money because of irresponsible behavior on behalf of Greek members.

For the above reasons, greater controls are warranted with respect to controlling Greek system members.

The Greek tradition is one of responsibility, maturity and academic and community contribution. However, many Greek members now participate in binge drinking, dangerous hazing acts, date rape and other activities that have made what was once a right of passage into adulthood and maturity a wrong of passage symbolizing irresponsibility and criminality.

Deaths on many campuses from Greek-related binge drinking, hazing and other activities continue to erode the quality of Greek life, campus life and community life. As such, more controls are warranted to hold Greek members more accountable and responsible for their actions.
