However, Freud believe that hypnosis or free association would cause a catharsis to occur in the patient’s mind, whereby they are able to remember traumatic episodes they have blocked from their conscious mind through the defense mechanism of repression. Once the recall and reliving of the trauma is experienced the patient can begin to heal. However, from this type of work Freud was able to construct a system of psychoanalysis that demonstrates how mental energies could create physical symptoms. Freud began to believe that sexual impulses also greatly affected neurotic patients and began developing his psychosexual stages (oral, anal, etc.) of development in the infant and child. If these stages are not successfully complete before moving on to the next, there will be various neuroses that will occur in the adult.
