The plot of Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner revolves around a liberal couple and their daughter, a couple whose attitudes are challenged when their white daughter brings home her black fiancé for dinner. Matt and Christina Drayton, played by Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, are liberals whose attitudes are challenged when their daughter Joey, (Katharine Houghton), brings home her fiancé who happens to be black, John Prentice (Sidney Portier). The fact that Joey and John intend to get married causes confusion and disagreement among both sets of parents. The fathers urge their children to be reasonable about going through with the marriage. Both argue that their children will suffer from ‘special problems’ if they go through with the interracial marriage in a prejudiced and racist world. The mothers, on the other hand, argue that their love is strong enough to rise above any problems their differences in color may create for them.
