Funerals Costs

Funeral customs are the collection of rituals and actions surrounding the death of a human being and the ultimate disposal of the corpse. The most common form of funeral custom is a burial, though cremation, mummification (preservation) and other practices are used. Most funeral ceremonies have similar features, like the laying out of the corpse, the watching of the corpse or the wake, and the mourning period and its accompanying ceremonies which often vary from one culture and religion to another. Many complain about the high cost and elaborate nature of modern day funerals and burials, “A few decades ago, we knew perfectly well what to make of the American way of death. It was overly sentimentalized, highly commercialized, and, above all, excessively expensive” (Gill 1).

Burial is the most elaborate form of funeral custom when it comes to preparation of the corpse (washing, embalming, clothing, etc.) and also when it comes to the costs involved. The average cost of a simple funeral is $5,000 and up, with the majority of them coming in at a much higher cost. There are many steps involved in a modern funeral and burial, from moving the remains to the funeral home to the cost of the casket and rental of the hearse. All of these services come with a price tag attached which can easily create a final burial cost that is in the tens of thousands of dollars.
