Generation X Americans are typically those considered those born after the baby boom generation in 1965, the majority of whom are now in their 20s and ready to enter the workplace. Yet this new generation has very little belief that their country represents any kind of future security for them. This generation has been raised on technology, developed a degree of isolation from typically having working parents, has lived with the threat of nuclear war and increasing environmental destruction, and has witnessed the dire economic condition and largely dissatisfied of the baby boomers, “They believe they’ll succeed only on their own initiative and have little confidence that either social security or traditional employer pensions will be around to support them in retirement. They’ve learned that they can’t take these things for granted. They seem to be more materialistic. The only meaningful measure of success is money, far more than any other age group,” (Gleckman 1). The main problem with this type of philosophy held among many Generations Xers, held among many members of that generation, is that they think the only reason the baby boomers messed up is because they didn’t make or save enough money. Yet, this is the same generation who thinks they can make and save more money while still working less and enjoying life more than did the majority of baby boomers.
