Global Perspective

By the time graduation rolls around, the faces under the cap and tassels, as well as the workforce and society into which enter those faces enter, will be much more diverse than anytime in the history of civilization. Accordingly, an undergraduate education must be geared toward an appreciation of diversity, an appreciation of how embracing diversity enriches the workplace and society. As the world becomes one without sharply divided borders and peoples, future graduates will experience a workforce and society that is comprised of many cultures, or they will work and live in societies that are foreign to the one in which they were developed. Therefore, it is crucial that the undergraduate development process encompasses learning that will promote tolerance, sensitivity and understanding among all peoples. All societies have certain socializing and infrastructure institutions diversity impacts. Politics and government, education, media, business management practices, and consumers all exist in every society. As such, diverse cultures bring to the table different customs, practices, worldviews, needs and talents. They also offer many challenges when the integration of diverse cultures is necessary for global success. In today’s competitive, fast-paced workplace and society, being able to understand the differences among cultures is crucial to tapping them as an undeveloped resource. While the undergraduate curriculum needs designed to offer courses that are global in context and accepting of diversity, there is a great deal more that can be done to insure that graduates will enter a global world with an acquired appreciation of the benefits and challenges that diversity offers.
