The following research includes a discussion of the nature of conflict as it relates to work groups. Three commonplace conflicts that are most likely to arise during group interaction are then described. Conflict resolution techniques devoted to each of the conflicts are then presented. Three specific actions that promote healthy and constructive relations among group members are next offered, with an explanation of why each is effective for achieving these outcomes. A conclusion summarizes the results of this research.

The growth of groups or teams in the workplace requires sound strategies for conflict resolution, as conflict will often erupt intra- and inter-group. Conflict often connotes something detrimental or harmful, a chaotic process involving arguing, fighting, blaming and stress. Despite the potential for harm conflict poses, many positive benefits arise from conflict if resolution strategies are well-designed and properly implemented by group leaders. Resolving group conflict can have enormous benefits for the group and organization, including: improving group solutions, higher productivity, encouragement of organizational change, increased group awareness of individual members, personal development, increased morale.
