Integrating The Japanese & American Workforce

There are myriad differences between Japanese and American cultures and management systems if we use the Ron Howard film Gung-Ho as a sole source. While the character portrayals and culture portrayals are broad and one-dimensional, there are some specific behaviors in the film that reveal the many differences between the two cultures. Japanese management is linked with national pride, and, as such, their management rehabilitation program for failed executives who must wear “ribbons of shame” resembles a boot camp more than an executive retraining program. American management, on the other hand, is portrayed as much more humanistic and empathetic toward the worker. Sick leave, ample break time, an acceptable percentage of defect in product, newspapers in the john, and good-buddy group gatherings represent the more laid-back American culture and work ethic. These differences are highlighted in the film when an employee is injured and a Japanese manager immediately orders everyone back to work. We also see it when an employee is publicly demoted to a custodial position after having too high a percentage of defects. We also see differences of culture in food, dress, humor, and stress release. For example, American workers smoke in the morning while the Japanese exercise. However, drinking, troubled relationships and trying to balance the demands of personal and work life appear to be equal in existence for bo
