There are many managed care barriers to covering the procedures and costs associated with alternative medicine or therapies. Alternative medicine is an umbrella terms that basically defines practices like chiropractic, homeopathy, herbalogy, naturopathy, massage therapy, hypnotherapy, and many others (George 9). While many of these alternative practices are lumped into one category, according to Managed Healthcare there are significant differences in amount of usage of these practices. For example, 9.3% of the population relies on chiropractors, 6.1% visit massage therapists, 16% have tried herbal remedies and 0.7% of the population has visited naturopaths (Rebitzer 10).

Many individuals who resort to alternative practices argue they are more effective and less costly than traditional practices. Those who have benefited from such practices and those who are employed in providing such practices (chiropractors, homeopaths, etc.) actively lobby legislators to reduce managed care barriers to such services.
