- From Electronics to Multi-National Enterprise -The Hitachi company was begun in 1910 as an electronics firm. Since that time it has become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electronics and technology. The company is very unique when it comes to its organizational structure. In fact, the company is so decentralized and large that it is often referred to as being headless when it comes to who is responsible for running the company. The company’s mission statement is “synergy and integration focusing the company on electronic systems for the 21st century. It’s a vision that spans the microscopic and the majestic. At one end, it’s about circuits packed so densely on silicon that a supercomputer can slide into a billfold. At the other, Hitachi would help build huge automated factories, steel plants, and intelligent skyscrapers,” (Gross, 1992: 94). This paper will discuss Hitachi’s organizational structure, its strategy and how it relates to structure, and some of the new ways in which robotics are being used by the company and the research and development being conducted on them.
