Both Jean Francis Millet’s Autumn Landscape with a Flock of Turkeys (ca. 1872) and Claude Monet’s Vetheuil in Summer (1880) are representative of 19th century art, the former being an example of naturalism with the latter representing expressionism. Millet’s Autumn is oil on canvas and 31 7/8 by 9 inches in size (Millet 1). Monet’s Vetheuil, one of twenty-six views the artists painted of Vetheuil, is also oil on canvas and measures 31 ½ by 24 ¾ inches in size (Monet 1).Jean Francis Millet, along with Jean Baptiste Camille Corot and Honore Daumier, was responsible for a move toward Realism in France just before Impressionism was founded. Of the landscape and figure painters of the Barbizon School, Millet was chief among them and he strove to glorify the countryside and peasantry in his natural landscapes. We can see this in Autumn, where the lone peasant is positioned monumentally against the flat, dull landscape and sky. The painting affords an inherent dignity to even the simplest of rural tasks, such as tending turkeys of harvesting hay. A socialism movement occurred during Millet’s era and his attempt to invest the poor with grandeur and dignity is a reflection of his time and sentiments toward the poor. In contrast, the landscape is portrayed as dull and flat with the greatest attention paid to the smallest of details.
