Japanese University Preparation

This is an excerpt from the paper...

There can be few subjects of study more potentially useful to the future life and career of a Japanese High School student than his or her learning to understand and speak the English language. In today’s age of globalization, technology, finance, and information are the keys to success and development. English, the lingua franca of the global community, is essential for reaping the benefits of globalization. While Japan is not considered a failure in many aspects, its inability to understand and grasp the English language makes it prone to failure and unable to take advantage of the benefits of globalization “There are several areas in which Japan deserves to be labeled a failure, but it is in English-the lingua franca of today’s world-that Japan has flunked the most conspicuously. The US non-profit organization Educational Testing Service (ETS) compiles and administers the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)…appallingly, Japan’s rank is a miserable 180 among the 189 countries in the United Nations” (Takashi 1).

This analysis will address why it is so imperative that Japanese High School students who wish to enter university study the English language. A conclusion will address the likelihood of Japan’s ability to overcome its apparent allergy to the English language.

ppears to hold back the success of Japanese career-oriented individuals is their inability to grasp and command the English language “If there are fields in which Japanese engineers fall behind in technological development in spite of their general competence, the chief problem will often be their poor grasp of English. They will be unable to digest the latest technological advances and swiftly and effectively transmit news of their own advances. They will, in short, fall further behind in every way” (Takashi 1). The Japanese high school student who thinks they will succeed abroad or in the global world of finance and business merely because they have a degree in their field and worked hard to earn it is fooling himself or herself if he or she thinks they will not be impeded in their career success without a good knowledge and grasp of the English language. In fact, Japanese Education Ministry officials have been stepping up efforts and creating programs designed to increase the numbers of foreign students who enroll in Japanese universities. The reason why they are doing this is because they recognize that the Japanese culture has closed itself off from the rest of the world and its cultures, a course that no longer is fruit
