King Lear

The Aquila Theatre Company is a London-based theatre group which specializes in innovative productions of classical drama such as Coriolanus, Macbeth, Agamemnon, and its most recent production in New York at the Clark Theatre, King Lear. Despite this, I did not find the King Lear production to be spectacularly innovative, though this production did do a great deal to add to my understanding of some of the key themes and characters in the piece.

The acting ability of the performers in the play did do a great deal to help define them more fully for me than my reading of Shakespeare’s text. For example, in the text I did not fully realize that King Lear goes insane, I just thought he was angry, frustrated and venting his frustrations out on the heath in the storm. However, in this production it is quite obvious King Lear is not just venting his frustrations, but that he has gone completely insane. This is achieved by the acting skill of the individual playin
