1) Within Aristotelian ethics and Greek concepts of virtue, the individual is perceived as having a spirit comprised of three parts. As Aristotle wrote in On Virtues and Vices, “wisdom is goodness of the rational part, gentleness and courage of the passionate, of the appetitive sobriety of mind and self-control, and of the spirit as a whole righteousness, liberality and, great-spiritedness” (1). In the Harris Interactive Reputation Survey, many of these virtues are taken into consideration. Lacking self-control, many corporate executives have ruined their company’s reputation through greed, lying, and other self-serving practices. Other companies have not exhibited ration in their handling of potential disasters, such as Firestone’s reluctance to come clean about its faulty product. As Alsop reports, “Firestone seems to have finally admitted the problem” (B1). Lacking the courage to be forthright in their actions, other companies have also suffered a loss of reputation and good will among consumers. The exorbitant executive compensation packages provided for GE executives in a time of downsizing and lay-offs caused one consumer to respond, “Stop treating executives like royalty” (Alsop B1). Aristotle also discusses righteousness as being “ready to distribute according to desert” (1). Many organizations have not acted in a righteous manner, making consumers doubt their motives even when they do attempt to be honest. As one individual n
