Set in the early 19th century in Spanish colonial California, The Mark of Zorro is a romantic adventure in the vein of Don Quixote and Robin Hood. It is the action adventure romance that launched a thousand films, with its wealthy, foppish young hero by day, Don Diego de la Vega, transforming by night into the daring, brave and protector-of-the-downtrodden, Zorro! With the aid of his deaf-mute servant Bernardo, Don Diego disguises himself with mask and cape and rides El Camino Real, coming to the assistance of those suffering the oppression of the tyrannical new commandante. Yet, on a broader level than action adventure or romance, the novel’s theme is one of appearances. The reaction to Diego de la Vega by the townspeople and his beloved Lolita Pulido is based on appearances. While the ridicule by day, at night, as Zorro, they cannot find accolades enough to describe him. All find him inadequate as Don Diego, but none find him lacking as Zorro.
