The laundering of money most often occurs when illegal activities that generate huge amounts of illicit monies must be covered up by their perpetrators. The goal of money laundering is to represent vast sums of illegally obtained money as having come from legal sources. As the World Bank defines it, “Dirty money is laundered to make it appear clean when illegally obtained money is transferred so that it appears to have come from legitimate sources” (Anti 3). The advent of new and electronic technologies has further complicated law enforcement efforts to crack down on money laundering activities at home and abroad.
