There are typically push and pull factors that fuel emigration. George Kracha is “pushed” to leave the coal fields of Hungary by abject poverty, few job prospects, and an oppressive regime. As Kracha ponders his journey, “he hoped he was likewise leaving behind the endless poverty and oppression which were the birthright of a Slovak peasant in Franz Josef’s empire” (Bell 1). There are also “pull” factors which motivate Kracha to move to America, including the promise of the “American Dream”, a life of freedom and riches. Kracha shares his grandiose dreams with Zuska, a married girl aboard on whom he spends his money for her birthday party; “Who knows? We may all be millionaires by then” (Bell 7). Thus there are both push and pull factors that motivate Kracha to leave Hungary for Pennsylvania.

Married life is difficult for George and Elena. They are foreigners in a foreign land, with little skills to help them assimilate. Ostracized as “Hunkies” and denied social and racial equality, their marriage survives many difficulties. The family’s ability to slowly become business owners manifests a pride that is short-lived because of a summer of irresponsible drunkenness by Djuro. He is forced to return to the steel mills. His daughter Mary marries a fellow Slovakian who is also employed in the mills as his grandson’s discontentment with the unfair nature of the mills and racism grows.
