Leonard Bernstein was an American composer, conductor and pianist born in 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts (Bernstein 1). He was educated at Harvard University and studied the arts in Philadelphia at the Curtis Institute of Music. While attending Curtis, he studied composition under the tutelage of Walter Piston and had Fritz Reiner and Serge Koussevitzky teaching him conducting. By the age of 25 he conducted the New York Philharmonic Society Orchestra in his conducting debut. In the 1940s, Bernstein became the conductor of the New York City Philharmonic Symphony and he directed the New York Philharmonic for over a decade beginning in the late 1950s. He also taught music at Berkshire Music Center and Brandeis University at different point in his career. Bernstein’s style was constructed from many different kinds of music and the forms it took were also varied. All of it was passionate. He wrote three symphonies for classic Broadway musicals, including On The Town, Wonderful Town and the spectacular West Side Story. Bernstein also composed the operetta Candide as well as ballets and other compositions. He also composed books on music composition and a compilation of his Harvard lectures. He won a lifetime achievement award Grammy in the 1980s.
