Presidential Scandal

Only in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is on the highest mountain.

Though he lost the 1960 presidential election to John F. Kennedy, Richard Milhous Nixon would win the 1968 presidential election, becoming the first president of the United States to resign from office amidst scandal and facing certain impeachment. Without doubt, the biggest issue Nixon faced during his nearly two terms of office was the war in Vietnam. The war in Vietnam created an unprecedented amount of turmoil in the U.S. between those who supported the war and those who remained opposed to it. Nixon campaigned against U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. While he did withdraw thousands of troops from Asia during his first year in office, Nixon actually escalated the war in Vietnam by his controversial bombing of Cambodia, Laos and North Vietnam. The war would continue to plague Nixon during his first term in office, a period wherein he also dealt with serious economic problems, including high levels of inflation and unemployment. Nixon devalued the dollar and instituted wage and price controls to help combat the economy. Throughout his political career, Nixon was often combative and suspicious of those he perceived as his enemies, particularly the press which he felt portrayed him in a negative light.
