Raging Bull Script

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The following examination of script elements is designed to analyze the psychological aspects of the main character, Jake LaMotta. The scene occurs when Jake is trying to get a picture on his television set and his brother, Joey, makes a comment in response to Jake’s insecurity over his wife that makes Jake believe he is sleeping with his wife, Vickie.

The scene is written well because it has Jake trying to achieve a small task like getting a picture on his television set which frustrates him. This reinforces the aspect of his character that is easily incensed by minor frustration levels. The dialogue reinforces the frustration as, when he pauses, he tells his brother he is “going to kill someone” if Vicki has been unfaithful.

Joey knows his brother is insecure, hard-headed, and violent. However, in keeping with his character as Jake’s brother, he is not afraid of Jake, a fact reinforced by his dialogue which tells Jake to “Go ahead and kill everybody. You’re a tough guy. Kill Vicki, kill Salvy, kill Tommy, kill me!” However, Joey’s lack of fear makes him include himself in his response.

In keeping with Jake’s character, this innocent inclusion by Joey is heard with paranoia and suspicion by Jake, something which reinforces his insecure nature. Even though Joey has been loyal to him, and even though he is his brother, Jake is unable to trust anyone because of his impulsive nature and deep insecurities.
