Seoul Korea Sociology
This is an excerpt from the paper...
There are many conflict and power differentials that are characteristic of the socio-political structure of Seoul, Korea. Perhaps the government, military, and religious groups vie for the most power, often conflicting with smaller, less powerful groups from political lobbying groups to student activists. While there can be no denying the influence of Confucianism on Seoul society, it is too simplistic to merely say that traditional values have developed from an authoritarian Confucian tradition. Instead, conflicting tensions exist. As one commentator notes, “Social values exist in terms of interacting dualities, a kind of yin-yang opposition and synthesis. There is tension between self-control and explosive volatility at the level of individual behavior, between the duty-bound austerity of Confucian family life and r4itualism and the abandon and ecstasy of shamanistic rites, between the orthodox concept of male supremacy and the reality of female power” (South 2-3).
