In Greene’s The Destructors and Lawrence’s The Rocking Horse Winner we have a similar theme running throughout each. In The Destructors we see young children who destroy because of the isolation and destruction they have witnessed in their war-torn environment, one that has filled them with similar emotions. In The Rocking Horse Winner we see a young child who is destroyed because the lack of real love and nurturing in his environment have spent him emotionally in an effort to help his mother be “lucky”. In other words, isolation and destruction within the environment cause dysfunctional emotions in the children in each of these stories, in other words emotion is a direct aspect of environment in children to both Greene and Lawrence.

In The Destructors we see that the boys come to destroy Mr. Thomas’ house because it represents a monument of riches to them in an environment that has been devastated by war. It is like a cupcake in the middle of an Ethiopian famine. The boys plan to destroy Mr. Thomas’ house even though he has been kind to them, let them play ball and has given them chocolates.
