The lighting should be muted as it is in the late afternoon, except there should be a bright, intense ray of sunlight hitting the spot at the base of the column from where Maria falls into Matthew’s arms. The contrast in lighting represents the pillar where Maria leaps into Matthew’s arms. The shadows on the pillar represent the dark waters of mistrust that must be overcome.
