Shaw's Arms and the Man
This is an excerpt from the paper...
The play Arms and the Man lampoons war by a variety of methods, namely satire, irony and sarcasm. This is accomplished through several different characters. It is accomplished by Sergius and Captain Bluntschli whose war experiences have taught them that war is anything but heroic and noble. It is also accomplished by the disillusionment of those who have not been to war, like Raina, when they discover from those who have what the actual experience is like. When Captain Bluntschli hides out in Raina rooms he is saved from certain death by enemy soldiers. However, he spends his time basically eating chocolates and disabusing Raina of any notion that war is heroic. When she initially hides him he tells her “Remember: nine soldiers out of ten are born fools” (Shaw 122). By slowing stripping layer after layer of illusion about war from Raina, Captain Bluntschli dispels any notion about the romanticism
