The social genesis of the eye refers to the artistic perception we bring to a work that is one largely based on historical and sociological understanding according to Pierre Bourdieu (312) “Free thought must be won by a historical anamnesis capable of revealing everything in thought which is the forgotten product of historical work…becoming resolutely aware of historical determinations.” The author argues that the eye that perceives art is manifested through social conditions which lend it meaning the first place, social conditions often arising from the morality and spirituality of a various group or society of people. When art is produced, it is not only a product of its era and social institutions from the perspective of the artist, but also from the perspective of the onlooker who gazes at the work in appreciation.
