There are many challenges facing today’s Spanish teacher. Aside from traditional challenges like overcoming resistance to learning a second language, a host of social changes present even greater challenges and potential successes in the modern classroom. The growing multiculturalism of US society, rapidly developing technologies, and increasing tolerance for diversity and inclusion present new challenges as well as new chances for promoting educational success.Perhaps one of the most crucial goals in teaching Spanish is adopting a perspective and worldview that embraces the multiculturalism and diversity among today’s student population. Preconceived notions about teaching, learning, culture, and a host of other aspects can cause a lack of success when teachers cling to attitudes of behavior, management, and process that do not work. The most successful Spanish teachers will adapt to their students. Failure to be able to remain open-minded and flexible are key goals to success, whereas dogmatic thinking and behavior are doomed to student and teacher failure. As one educator notes “Perhaps your teaching style is colored by your cultural values and assumptions that no longer function well in today’s muticultural classroom. If you are teaching children from other cultures, their behavior and learning style will differ from your style and expectations, which will result in a frustrating stand-off where no one wins.
