There are quite a few teenagers portrayed in the novel, the majority of them users of crack, alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco. Nonetheless, we spend very little time with the majority of them. Miguel is the protagonist of the story, a sixteen year old crack runner who consumes alcohol, marijuana and cigarettes in equal doses. Spider, the main villain of the piece, is known to us primarily in phone conversations and through Miguel’s dreams and recollections. Ritchie, leader of a street posse is addicted to crack. Amelia is a girl who is a contradiction to Miguel because she is a college girl who smokes crack and keeps “crack pipes in her drawers” (Rodriguez 2). Firebug will consume any quantity of drugs or alcohol that are available to him, but his drugs of choice appear to be crack and alcohol. Angela is a crack whore who smells. Cristalena is the only straight teenager portrayed in the novel, the girl who helps Miguel escape the street life of a drug runner in favor of their love.There are truly few specific organizations or institutions described in the community of Spidertown; however, the ones that are tend to ignore the plight of teenagers who exist on the street. The only police portrayed in the novel aside from the stock detective-with-a-heart-of-gold, Sanchez, are brutal, abusive graft collectors.
