Speech Impediment Tech.

There are more than 2.5 million Americans who are afflicted with a speech impairment of some kind (Commission 1). Included in this number are 4% of all children, with 1% of all adults continuing to suffer from a speech impairment—an impairment which affects men more than women by a 4:1 ratio (Siegel-Itzkovich 11). Nonetheless, millions of individuals who suffer a speech impediment are being helped overcome the obstacles such an affliction presents through technology. As in so many other aspects of our life from transportation to finance, technology has dramatically changed our lives in the modern era. This is especially true when it comes to health care and improving the quality of life for many people suffering from physical impairment. When it comes to speech impediments, technology has created a means of improvement for both the individual who suffers from the impediment and those who assist in their professional care. This research will explore a few of the technologies responsible for helping individuals with speech impediments overcome the traditional limitations posed by such a disability.
