Speech Bush

The day the Florida State Attorney General Katharine Harris certified the election in Florida in favor of George Bush, the Texas Governor delivered a speech in reaction to the decision on the national news at 6pm, Sunday evening, November 26th.

The choice of topic for Governor Bush was his belief that the certification in Florida rightly named him the winner of the 2000 Presidential Election. His speech was tailored down to three main elements based on the utmost significance of this topic, the eventual occupant of the White House. These elements were: 1) His belief that the certification was fair and final, 2) His hope that Al Gore would see this as a fair and just end to the election, and 3) His appeal to the White House to give him the keys to the transition office and allow his transition team headed by Vice Presidential candidate Dick Cheney to start preparing for the next Administration.

Bush’s organization and preparation were atrocious. He never took his eyes off the teleprompter in front of him and he made numerous mistakes in pronunciation and phrasing which showed that this was the first time he ever laid eyes on the speech. He provided no important information, but instead chose to declare himself the winner because of the certification and then just as presumptuously he asked for the keys to the White House. He tried to persuade his audience that this was the best thing for Americans and definitely in the “national interest.” He tried fear tactics by suggesting that any longer of a delay and the country would be sorely wounded from the lack of president-elect preparation time. His credibility was further damaged by his delivery of the speech. He looked like a frightened doe caught in front of a car’s headlights.
