Briefly describe any scholastic honors you have won beginning with ninth grade.After graduating high school, I was awarded First Place in the University of Pernambuco mathematics contest (Vestibular 1999). I won First Place in the same contest in 1999 (Vestibular 2000). As the winner of the prestigious contest two years in a row, I merited the attention of the State Secretary of Education, Dr. Efrem Maranharo, who personally awarded me the certificate of honor. Presently, I am enrolled in the Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences (MMSS) honors program in economics/mathematics at Northwestern University. A review of my official high school records will provide more information regarding my achievements and accomplishments. Please describe which of these activities (extracurricular and personal activities or work experience) has had the most meaning for you, and why. Work experience has had the most meaning in my life. I originated my first company at the age of sixteen. It began due to my acquaintance with a man who specialized in importing cleaning products. He expressed an interest in the potential he recognized in me. As a test of my potential, he invested responsibility in me for a small number of transactions. After successfully completing the first few, he created a small office for me from where I began my own venture. After high school time elapsed before I entered college. I feel this time during which I opened what is now a successful international export company located in Brazil was invaluable to my personal and professional development. Because of my sound high school education, I was keenly interested in applying the theories I had learned to real business situations. With the assistance of an acquaintance I opened a company that exported generic brand detergent at the age of sixteen.
The business was originally lucrative, but the sharp decline of the Brazilian Real against the US dollar created higher expenses and fewer profits. I was in my last year of high school and decided to close the company and devote my entire energies to finishing my academic career. After graduation I began working with my father in his agricultural business, where revenues were generated from products grown on our farm and locally marketed. However, local markets were saturated with competitors and sales were flat in addition to the risks of growing perishable products.
