As a potential medical school enrollee, I have a special interest in Temple because I believe its core focus is one that will work symbiotically with my own special skills and interests. Temple’s reputation of training excellent clinicians and its commitment to hands-on training, academics, the community and underserved populations is a perfect match for my own experience and commitment. During the summers of 1995-1998 I spent 40 hours per week as a biomedical researcher at the National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Child Health & Human Development. Not only did this work result in the publication of two professional papers I co-authored, but it taught me the vital necessity of hands-on training for future clinicians. Working for six weeks at Stepping Stones Pre-Med Program at the Shady Grove and Washington hospitals also gave me a realistic understanding of the clinical subtleties among different fields of medicine (OB/GYN, Surgery, Psychiatry, etc.). There is a world of difference between the classroom and the real world and Temple’s commitment to offering both theory and practice appeals to me. I believe that as the body is not nourished without mental and physical stimulation, so development is short-changed by an imbalance of theory and real-world training. The patient interaction available at Temple offers the unique ability to gain both types of experience.

Another primary focus of Temple that well-suits my future career and personal development is their commitment to the community and underserved populations. Many of my extra-curricular activities were focused around interaction with the community and working with children from underserved populations. I worked as a Big Sister and also volunteered on Saturday mornings at my church to teach traditional Latin and Spanish songs and dances to underserved children in my neighborhood.
