The Adlerian model of psychology is one that is a values-based, holistic, theory of personality, model of psychopathology, and technique of psychotherapy. The goal it to encourage the development of psychologically health and cooperative couples and families. The model balances the needs for individual optimal development and social responsibility. The main criteria of mental health are a feeling of human connectedness and the willingness to develop oneself fully and contribute to the welfare of others. In the case at hand, Janet’s early childhood traumas left her with feelings of inferiority. In order to compensate she has created a fictional goal for herself that promised future security and success. It has left her with an unrealistic goal of exaggerated significance and superiority over others. She blames all of her unhappiness on her husband and childhood sexual traumas. Occupation, love, and sex are the three main social goals of the individual. Consequently, Janet’s unconscious fictional goal is self-centered and emotionally exploitative of others – her husband and her lesbian
