Tiger Fan Ethnography (LSU)

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Before veering into a discussion of the ethnography of Louisiana State University football fans and Tiger Stadium, it is essential to understand what is, exactly, ethnography. An ethnography is a form of social science research. Ethnography owes its roots to anthropology and sociology, but it is different than observational methods because it often includes personal interaction “Ethnography relies on up-close, experience-near participation…it usually includes intensive language and culture learning, intensive study of a single field or arena, and a blend of historical, observational, and interview methods” (What 1). Ethnography allows for the discovery and exploration of local viewpoints, in addition to afforded unique insight into specific categories of human experience from an up-close and personal perspective. The methods involved in ethnography allow for a bottom-up perspective as a means of broadening the traditional top-down point of view. The interactive nature of ethnographic research allows for often obscure aspects of human nature to reveal themselves to the researcher. This discussion will provide an ethnography of my interactive research among fans of the Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers and their home, Tiger Stadium. In order to present this research, I attended three Tiger home football games and participated in three tailgate parties in the parking lot of Tiger Stadium.

Tiger Stadium turned 75 years old as the new millenium dawned, a stadium rated by Gannett News Service as “the most dreaded road playing site in America in a poll of coaches” (Tiger 1). Tiger Stadium is dear to Tiger football players, coaches, students and Tiger fans alike. At different times in its history the stadium has served double duty as a dormitory for students and players “This unique structure also once served as the dormitory for approximately 1,500 students, and while LSU’s athletic dormitory (Broussard Hall) was being renovated during the fall of 1986, the LSU football players lived in Tiger Stadium” (Tiger Stadium 2). Despite its multiple and diverse uses, there is a general consensus among NCAA football players and coaches that Tiger Stadium and Death Valley are the loudest and most hostile environments in all of college football.
