In Moravia’s Time of Indifference, we see a family in the midst of disintegration. Though the story occurs in one of the wealthiest sections of Rome, the family is thoroughly middle-class. As such, all the family members are preoccupied with money and sex. Living in 1920s Italy, fascist society came with so many limitations on personal freedom, especially those of thought, that sex and money have become a primary focus among the middle-class. Largely bored and indifferent, the three family members and two others are seen over a period of two days and three nights. The three family members are Carla, her brother Michelle, and their mother Mariagrazia. Neither Carla nor Michelle know what they want in live, and their conscious awareness of their puppet-like state in an existential world (and a fascist society) render them weak and ineffectual. Their thoughts waver between ego-wish fulfillment or self-destruction. Carla tries to deal with her dilemma by adopting different masks to wear, always striking a pose or painting her face with make-up to create an identity for herself. But she understands the realities of the world. This is why she says it will not b a problem when her mother’s boyfriend, Leo, decides to marry her. She knows her mother is terrified of being left alone without wealth and will gladly accept the union since it will keep her in the means to which she has become accustomed.
