Universal or nomological statements are ones that “conform to or state laws of nature or rules of logic” (Neufeldt 921). Since science tries to determine the how of observable natural phenomena it could be argued that nomological statements are critical for any kind of explanation that is scientific. This is because science is concerned with broad laws of nature and these laws are universal and applicable to the whole of nature. This is because the laws and knowledge uncovered by science are the norms or the typical findings in the world and nature at large. Yet, there are times when science is not interested in the universal, but rather the individual or abnormal case. For example, if one is doing research on children with autism then the knowledge uncovered would be scientific and valid for children with autism, but it would not be valid or applicable to those without autism (the universal norm).
