Werther and Pechorin

Both Lermontov’s A Hero of Our Time and Goethe’s The Sorrow of Young Werther depict the impact of love on their respective protagonists, Pechorin and Werther. Both Pechorin and Werther are romantic heroes, but Pechorin’s “constant grief” over the human condition is quite different in tone and tenor than young Werther’s “heart [that] is dead” (Lermontov 48; Goethe 95). Despite this difference, both protagonists view human existence from a melancholy perspective that does not admit hope.In A Hero of Our Time, we see that Pechorin’s character is described in this passage as being lifeless with respect to his eyes, “…they never laughed when he laughed” (Lermontov 48). Since Pechorin is not truly evil, then we might correctly assume his condition is based on “deep and constant grief” (Lermontov 48). Pechorin cannot bring himself to form long-lasting, deep commitments with anyone, including those he loves the most. His romantic heroism perceives the world as disillusioning and hopeless.
