In Economy and Society, Max Weber attempts to outline his theory of economic sociology. Weber studied modern capitalism for most of his life in an effort to formulate a theoretical understanding of economic sociology in both its character and historical origin. Parts of Economy and Society deal with the history of economics, discussing such social economies as feudalism and patrimonialism. However, Weber tries to distinguish between an historical and a sociological approach. Weber argues that acquisition is man’s ultimate purpose in life. He also felt that all social and cultural sciences had meaning at the core. For Weber, sociology was a unique science because it deals with human behavior from the perspective of the individual to which he or she attaches meaning, and it is positioned towards the behavior of others. Weber, in Economy and Society, attaches economics to this concept of sociology and renders an economic sociology theory. Weber’s economic sociology is a theory in which his sociology ideas are tied directly to economic phenomena, rather than as a link between them. Weber believed that the organization or society is composed of members and stakeholders. They accept the purpose of society as rational. Role relationship, a hierarchical structure of vertical and horizontal links, duty dependencies and obligations are all logical to assume.
