The U.S. is the world lead in families without fathers (Klinger 1). In Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, we see a connection between the protagonist of the play, Willy Loman, and deadbeat dads. We see this connection most evident in the way Willy’s son Biff resents his father and the way in which Willy’s absence from the home has caused Biff to be overdependent on his mother. Willy has spent much of his life on the road as a traveling salesman. This has prevented him from being the stable presence and chief care-giver in his own home. His sons are now older and Willy thinks all he has to do is step in and give them some encouragement and they will be able to achieve success.
