If I were to write the great American novel the central theme would be the protagonist’s search for self-discovery and meaning in an existential and often hostile external environment. The novel would be designed to show that many paths may bring fulfillment of desire, but the only path that does not bring about the loss of the soul is the fulfillment of self. The style would be semi-omniscient stream-of-conscious narration with a heavy dose of both dialogue and internal monologue.
