Organizational Change on a Structural Level

One type of organizational change is structural change. Structural changes affect certain aspects of the formal task and authority definitions in an organization. Gibson, Ivansevich, and Donnelly in Organizations, Behavior, Structures, Processes explain that four interventions intended to change the organizational structure are:

The authors expand on this explanation by describing each of these four types of changes. Job redesign reflects the theory that productive efficiency, job satisfaction, and product quality increase when jobs include a significant amount of autonomy and variety, and when employees receive regular feedback from their supervisor. System-4 organization involves application of an organic organization design. System-4 change would need to occur when there is a mismatch between the organizational structure and the demands of the job environment.

As the name suggests, socio-technical systems try to integrate a company or organization's social systems with its technical system after an evaluation has determined there is a fundamential mismatch between the social system and the technical systems in place. This particular approach is usually undertaken in connection with the constructions of new office facilities or plants. According to Gibson, Ivansevich, and Donnelly, the term socio-technical systems actually applies to a set of idea that emphasizes the fact that the social and technical systems and of the total organization to its total environment. The final type of change mentioned by the authors involves a concept called management by objective. Management by objective encourages employees to participate in establishing job related objectives for themselves and for their business units.
