The Division of Labor in Organizations: A Book Review

This is an excerpt from the paper...

According to Gibson, Inacevich, and Donnelly in Organizations: Behavior, structure and Processes, specialization and division of labor concerns the extent to which jobs are specialized (Gibson, Inacevich, Donnelly, 476). Specialization refers to different units of labor being used differently in the production process. Henry Ford who perfected specialization on the assembly line process used some types of labor to produce only one particular type of output, while others were used to produce different products. Henry Ford had put into action the principle observed centuries earlier by the economist Adam Smith, that specialization of labor often has the effect of increasing total output.
