OFFICIAL RESPONSE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: COMPARISONS BETWEEN CIVILIAN AND MILITARY JURISDICTIONS IN THE UNITED STATES: A PROPOSED RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A research design is proposed to compare the official response by civilian and military jurisdictions in the United States to reports or incidents of domestic violence. The term "official response," as it will be used in the proposed research, refers to actions taken by criminal justice professionals, social service professionals, and health care professionals.

The proposed research design is exploratory and descriptive in character. The objectives of the proposed research are to learn what the official responses are of the relevant civilian and military agencies, to describe those responses, and to compare those responses within the context of the civilian-military dichotomy.

The proposed research design is structured to provide two avenues to the development of the information required to fulfill the objectives of the proposed research. First, members of official agencies, both civilian and military, that are responsible for responding to reports or incidents of domestic violence will be surveyed. The purpose of the surveying of the members of official agencies will be to identify and describe official responses to reports or incidents of domestic violence from the perspective of those persons who so respond.
