NAME OF ACTIVITY: Pizza Puzzle PiesSOURCE OF INFORMATION: Kathy Charmer's: Giant Encyclopedia of Science Activities MATERIALS: Unused personal-size pizza boxes (It is recommended that children have pizza for class lunch that day to help spur immediate recognition and recall abilities) Cut cardboard circles to size (must fit into pizza boxes). Mix the red paint and glue to make pizza 'sauce'. Cut out shape toppings from construction paper. Have children roll length of clay and press it around the rim of the cardboard to form a crust. Have children paint inside the rim with the paint/glue mixture. Talk about which shapes resemble which pizza toppings: yellow triangles - pineapple, pink squares - ham, black ovals - black olives, green ovals - green olives, red circles - pepperoni, and small white rectangles - onions. Have the children add their own choice of 'toppings'. As the children put on the toppings, talk about their different shapes. Dismiss the children by asking them 'which topping they like the most?'.
