Cognitive Therapies: An Evalution

Cognitive therapies suggest that certain patterns of thinking can cause symptoms by creating a distorted picture of the world around us and causing anxiety, depression or anger (Cognitive). Behavioral therapy is designed to weaken the association between troubling situations and habitual responses to them. A combination of these therapies has been found to be more effective than other types of psychotherapy for treating psychological problems, including panic attacks and depression (Cognitive-Behavioral, 2004). CBT was originally developed to treat depression, but is now used to treat a variety of other conditions and is considered the first line of treatment for anxiety and depression (Massachusetts, 2004). It has recently become recognized as a treatment for schizophrenia. In Britain and abroad, it has been found to significantly reduce distress, psychotic symptoms, and negative symptoms for people with schizophrenia. A panel of experts recently recommended CBT be used in the United States as the state-of-the-art treatment for schizophrenia. CBT with schizophrenia patients only works if the psychiatrist accepts the patient's view of reality and helps them use this misconception to manage life's problems (Cognitive-behavioral, 2004). The aim is to free the patient from stress and reduce their symptoms so that they can function in society.

CBT focuses on current happenings and helps the patient solve problems and change their distorted thinking so that they think more realistically about what is happening around them (Cognitive-behavioral, 2004.
