The objective of this paper is to review three articles that discuss the effectiveness of experimental cures for adult leukemia patients. Apart from providing an overview of the chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)-ła common type of leukemia that mainly afflicts adults, along with the challenges of treating leukemia, the articles describe three different types of treatments that have been highly successful in curing patients in experimental studies. Two of the articles discussed the success of oral drugs, ST1571 and Glivec, in treating adults suffering from CML ("New Drug Shows Best Results Against Common Type of Leukemia," 2003; Gorman, 2001, p. 61). In the third article, the effectiveness of the use of stem cells from umbilical cord blood in bone-marrow transplants to treat patients suffering from terminal leukemia is examined ("A Lifeline for Leukemia," 2001, p. 69).
